José Javier Hernández Ayala es un Geógrafo Físico y Climatólogo, Catedrático Asociado en Análisis Físico-Espacial y Director del Laboratorio de Computación Académica Pier Luigi Caldari (LCAPLC) de la Escuela Graduada de Planificación del Recinto de Río Piedras de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. El Dr. Hernández Ayala imparte cursos enfocados en sistemas de información geográficos y análisis espacial, y sus aplicaciones en la planificación.
Sus intereses de investigación se centran en la relación entre el cambio climático y eventos extremos como ciclones tropicales, precipitación excesiva, calor extremo, inundaciones, sequias, etc., y sus impactos socioeconómicos. Actualmente el Dr. Hernández Ayala se encuentra trabajando en un proyecto de investigación enfocado en analizar espacialmente el calor extremo en Puerto Rico, sus impactos en las comunidades y las implicaciones para la planificación.
